International Influence: Civil War
Cotton Diplomacy
A method used by Confederate leader, Jefferson Davis, as well as some other influential people to win foreign allies. The South used their massive cotton industry to almost bribe countries into siding with them. In particular, the South wanted to sell a huge amount of cotton to Britain, who needed cotton in order to maintain their textile industry. In return, the Confederacy believed that the British to side with them. Unfortunately for them, this did not happen. It turned out that Britain had more than enough cotton on their hands and had other suppliers like India and Egypt.
